The Yaure people, 20,000 in total, settled in the central region of the Côte dIvoire, between the Baule people to the west, the Guro tribe to the east. Their art and some traditions are influenced by those powerful neighbors. Nevertheless, they possess a strong sense of identity and have evolved a refined art. The mask featured above is a spectacular creation; blending the old world supernatural yu spirit mask twins with a modern sculpted rendition of the everyday task of sewing. Both sections are well done but the two human figures absolutely steal the show. The detailing is clear, exact and very realistic. From the stack of cloth, to the stool the man sits upon to the sewing machine and table itself all are very well crafted. This is a unique hardwood mask that shows off the talent of the Yaure artisans!
