African jewelry is as variegated as the African people themselves. Armed perhaps with the richest resources in the world the African jeweler is constrained only by his imagination and in certain cases by tribal tradition. The reasons jewelry is worn is just as varied. Ears in general are pierces to enhance beauty, show tribal identity and to display wealth. Kirdi and Lobi women wear earrings to protect them from dangerous supernatural forces that can enter the body through the ear. Tuareg women adorn their lobes with earrings made from ‘the metal of the Prophet’ silver, for protection. These well made Tuareg earrings are featured individually below. All areas are silver unless otherwise indicated, including the post.
