You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to show your appreciation for African Art. Maybe you are looking for something a little extra to highlight a mud cloth pillow, a little statue that sits on a table or maybe something to fill that nagging blank corner on the wall!
Our small masks are perfect! They are low cost but the best part is that they are Authentic! These items were not made for the trade. They have been gathered after actual use during public festivals!
The first mask is from the Tetela people:
The Tetela or Motetela reside in the Congo and belong to the Mongo ethnic group. The word Motetela comes from a god of that name which means " he who does not laugh." The Tetela were neighbors to several Congo tribes but were especially close to the Kusu. They were shamefully separated from them by invading colonists and slave trading Arabs and Belgiums in the late 1800s. Today the Tetela celebrate their survival and tribal unification with other Congo groups. This wooden mask is atypical of unique Tetela mask art.
