Usually cast in bronze this beautiful Queen Mother who was the mother of a Oba, has been fashioned in terracotta. This medium predates the art of African bronze casting. Queen Mothers (Iyobas) played an important role at the royal court. She sat in regal splendor at the court where she served as a chief and as an advisor to the King. Due to her status and rank she was allowed to wear certain royal regalia limited to her, the King and the war Chief (Ezomo) of the kingdom. The headdress on the figure shows the headdress known as the ‘bird’s beak’ which is a wig with precious coral attached to form a net-like hair covering. The terracotta rendition exhibits great detailing and a nautral facial expression that demonstrates the expertise of the craftsman. A nicely done unusual selection!
