Our shea butter is 100% pure African shea butter! Not a blend not a mixture but 100% pure shea butter. The women of West Africa have been using shea butter for centuries. The Karite nut tree, which can live for 300 years, is often called the tree of life by African women who make this precious butter by hand. The shea butter is produced from the Karite nut tree found in the savannahs of West and Central Africa and has soothing, moisturizing and protecting effects on the skin. Yet only recently it has become the darling of the western cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Almost all parts of the tree have some practical use. The bark is an ingredient in traditional medicines against certain childhood illnesses and minor scrapes and cuts. The shell of the nuts can repel mosquitoes. Above all, being completely non-toxic and gentle, the fruity part of the nut, when crushed, yields a vegetable oil that is called shea butter or karite. The process of making shea butter is long and arduous work for the women of Africa. They awake early to collect the fruits of the Karite Nut tree. They carry up to 80 pounds of fruits upon their heads back to the village to begin the process of extracting the butter from the kernel of the fruit. The pits are first removed from the fruit, boiled, sun-dried and finally roasted. When the pits have been completely dehydrated, they are hand crushed. This work takes an average of 20 hours to produce 2 1/5 pounds of shea butter. Shea butter is one of natures’ greatest moisturizers. The butter actually enables your skin to absorb moisture from the air and as a result, it becomes softer and stays moisturized longer. Because of its softening, anti-drying and protective effects, shea butter is a choice ingredient in soap, shampoos, lip balms, sun care products, hand creams, body massage products and anti-wrinkle creams. Shea butter also contains an abundance of healing ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, proteins and an unique fatty acids. The high level of vegetable fats found in shea butter contribute to its ability to heal burns and wounds and to promote cell regeneration and capillary circulation. It is commonly used in the treatment of eczema, rashes, dermatitis, skin allergies, fungal infections, blemishes, wrinkles, sun burn, stretch marks, scars and scrapes. Shea butter can also be used to treat rheumatism and aching muscles and to ease colds because it decongests nasal mucous tissues. It is very well tolerated by the skin for it does not normally trigger any allergic reaction and can even be used on very sensitive skin areas such as mucous tissues and around the eyes. This all-natural product also contains cinnamic acid, which provides us with a natural sunscreen and anti-inflammatory agent against the suns’ damaging UV rays. The daily use of shea butter on the body and face can delay the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and help prevent skin cancer. We offer two types of this precious butter. On the left is shea butter from the Ivory Coast. This whitened medium is refined, virtually odorless, harder in texture and less harsh to ensure safe use for persons with very sensitive skin. On the right is the golden deep yellow raw form from the country of Ghana. It is very creamy and smooth to the touch and has been described as having a unique and pleasant light fragrance that vanishes quickly. When ordering please select either the Ivory Coast (white) or the Ghana (deep yellow) butter.
