Nacre is also known as mother of pearl. It is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some mollusks as an inner shell layer. It is very strong, resilient, and iridescent. Pearls and the inside layer of pearl oyster and freshwater pearl mussel shells are made of nacre. The irridescence produces different wavelengths of light, resulting in different colors of light being reflected at different viewing angles.
