The country of Mali is home to a diverse collective of ethnic groups whose artwork when sampled reveal attributes unique to each tribe. Common ground can be found when the eye goes beyond the medium such as wood, feathers or metal and beyond the physical form of the object such as a statute, mask or seat and look instead towards the underlying ideology behind the creation of the item and its adjoining symbolism which is the fore bearer of its purpose or function. For example virtually all tribes choose to exalt members of their leadership hierarchy whether political, spiritual or militaristic. A chair or stool can be a symbol of such glorification. It is understood to be a seat of great importance, a place of recognized honor and status for the owner when coupled with certain motifs. The selection on display has one outstanding symbolic feature, that of the leopard. In Africa the leopard is feared and revered at the same time. ItÂ’s attributes historically have been connected with those of the king and great leaders. For the leopard to be the focal point of this chair it is clear that the seat was meant exclusively for royal use. In fact when the king and his entourage would visit from village to village chairs of this nature were bought along for either the king or other important dignitaries to rest upon during outdoor activities. The Mali chair is crafted from a hard, smooth attractive wood. Bold edge detailing is featured throughout the piece. Users can endure a long conversation while enjoying a slight back recline that aids in alertness while reducing back strain. Another highlight is its solid framework and unique design.
