A Maasai saying: "If, when the sun rises, the heavens are red, the Maasai say it will rain; and if, when the sun sets the sky is the color of blood, they say that there are some warriors out raiding who have been successful." There are countless romanticized tales that center around these tall, imposing Maasai giants, fighting courageously against man and beast. They are the mighty lion hunters of Africa, brave of heart and the able assassins of any human attacker. This double sided sword is an old Maasai favorite for staving off affronts from livestock predators and two legged enemies! The blade is heavy and intended to be sharp on both sides giving it the ability to deliver a lethal blow easily. The "Seme" on display has been without an active user for decades and shows slight signs of neglect. With a little loving care the blade can be restored. The wooden hilt has a worn leather casing that is hard and battle tested.
The hardened leather casing is a gem and bespeaks of the combos age. It is especially well made with traditional vertical hand sewn stitching that runs up the middle of the sheath. A loop has been incorporated onto the back of the sheath to hold a matching leather strap which enables the owner to carry it on the shoulder. Newer made for the trade models of this sword lack such innovation whereas this selection was crafted in the late 20th century. Good find!
