A truely great honor has been bestowed upon Authentic Africa. We are so very pleased to be able to offer selections from the collection of Mr. Bah Abdoulaye a student of the late great founder of African Art history Dr. Roy Sieber. Mr. Abdoulaye selections will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum in New York 2014.
Tribe: Dengese
Material: Wood
Age: Mid 20th
Provenance: Bah Abdoulaye Collection
Unlike most tribes in Africa the Dengese people of the Congo do not produce or use any masks. Theirfigurative statuary and palm wine cups though are held in high regard in the arts community. Their artistic endeavors are easily identified by distinctive scarification markings placed throughout the body of work. The tall portrait cup on display is an excellent example of Dengese extensive detailing. The entire cup has taken the form of the head and neck of the popular Dengese male ancestor that is subject of much of their statuary.
