The Dengese of the Congo, neighbors of the Kuba in Central Africa, have a structured governmental branch lead by the Etoshi (king), chiefs, dignitaries and the like which are balanced in authority by powerful tribal groups such as the blacksmiths, hunters and most noted and feared those engaged in the summoning of supernatural entities and powers, the Nganda. Most Congo natives adhere to age-old tradition for problem solving. They place their trust in the powers of the fetish to aid them during times of need. These pieces can vary in the materials used and size depending on the tribal need for collective ceremonies or personal citizen request. Each is believed to have supernatural powers brought about through the magical workings of the village Nganga (fetishtist). The Nganga creates and activates this power by placing medicines such as animal or human parts, clay, plants and other indigenous organic items around and inside the object. The fetish may be called upon to deal with issues concerning; disease, protection, revenge or good fortune in general.
As stated the material used to create these valued objects can indeed vary. In this instance a darkened brownish, veined cloth was used to create a pair of doll-like figures. The pair, semi spongy to the touch, sitting erect in the classic Dengese folded legged position, have been fashioned with black cotton fiber bands on the arms with the female sporting an additional one that wraps around her waist. These fetish dolls represent a high ranking male and female couple as evidenced by the monied cowrie shell eyes and pronounced seeded neckwear around the neck of the male which is empowered by a lone spirit bell. Each has a central protrusion that represents the central core of their being that has been affected by the spiritual intervention of the Nganda.
The true purpose of their commissioned creation is not exactly known, this is an uncommon offering but in general such fetishes are given to newlywed couples to help promote a positive union and to deflect all negatively directed to them. There might have been a jealous suitor that was denied or perhaps this marriage was arranged to keep peace between neighboring villages. Either way the Nganga summoned a deity to ensure that this couple would prosper.
In the West dolls are seen as children's playthings and are taken lightly. On the continent of Africa dolls are taken most seriously, from becoming enchanted in cult rituals to representing important ancestors and yes they also aid young girls and boys along the path to maturity.
The price is for the pair.
