Typically when one thinks of Africa and musical instruments the mind conjures up images of Djembe drums echoing important messages across vast landscapes or dozens of hands pounding out beats for a celebratory tribal event. All of this is true yet African instrumentation goes way beyond drums and commonly recognized usage. Throughout the continent many ethnic groups hold special rituals in which otherworldly spirits are beseeched to attend and once present enticed to stay. Instruments used during these special occasions have been created under the care of important village spiritualist. Only the most seasoned craftsmen are called upon for the task and to work directly under the supervision of those know to have a connection with the supernatural. When used for this purpose whether mask, statuary or instrumental the sacred objects are referred to as "fetish." The rattle that is offered represents just that. This hand held instrument emits a low rattling sound when the two animal horn tips that have been placed around the bowl shaped body bangs against the wood. Goat hair and the horns are held in place by two strong braided cords. The sound is thought to attract certain ancestral spirits.

The fetish in its entirety consists of a Dan tribe male head with eyes that have been bordered with the same type of braided fiber as the body, lending to the theory that this figure can see into another realm. A third horn protrudes from the back of the head and his hair is raised and detailed on top. A slender long ringed neck is supported by a bulging bowl like torso and a flattened bottom on which it stands. The wooden rattle is brought out during certain important tribal events and shook when called upon. It is the sole property of the spiritualist in command for the ceremony.
