This instrument is one of the oldest forms of communication used in Africa. In the past, the drum was used to signal others from great distances, often in a network of drummers, relaying messages of urgency throughout the continent. To this day, drums still play a very important part in African life where they are called upon during various tribal rituals and celebrations. There are a variety of drum types that are used in Africa. The one on display, carved from one piece of native wood, is called a “slit drum.” This selection has three slits which open up into a hollow chamber. Sound is produced when the outer portion or tongue of the slit is hit with a stick or mallet. This particular drum is especially good for long distance communication when positioned along a river or valley. The size of this drum though is perfect for its purpose which is to help announce the start of a tribal affair and to add musical rhythms during the celebration!
This thick hardwood, weighty drum has been cleverly crafted so that it is easily carried. Two tribal mask replicas one red, one black are joined at the top creating a useful handle. Gecko lizards and striped black, cream and red markings adorn the drum.
This is a fine working selection that will help get your party started! The stick is included.
