Ashanti or Akan symbols reflect traditional mores, specific communal values, philosophical concepts, codes of conduct and social standards. They symbolize parables, proverbs, popular sayings, historical events, animal and human characteristics. These symbols are found on textiles, jewelry and perhaps most famously crafted within Ashanti seating. The boldly crafted motif on the above stool is the highly revered Akan symbol for "wisdom knot" or Nyansapo. It conveys the idea of wisdom, ingenuity, intelligence and patience.
The belief is that in practice "a wise person has the capacity to choose the best meeans to attain a goal. Being wise implies broad knowledge, learning and experience, and the ability to apply such faculties to practical ends."
