To the Ashanti the elephant represented the embodiment of royalty and physical power. The Ashanti royal arts known for emphasizing wisdom and power frequently featured lions and elephants as royal signifiers. The owner of a seat of this type was a king or queen that had control over a substantial military force. Traditionally the right to use certain patterns when creating a stool was tightly regulated by the king and permission was granted to only a few supporters. Stools were given as gifts in the 19th century to those loyal to the Ashanti by the kings’ court. This stool has been carved from a black hardwood.
