One of the most essential elements of tribal survival is the ability for its female members to successfully conceive and bear strong healthy children. The male villagers and hierarchy must provide a stable enough environment for this to be accomplished. Despite best efforts African women have had to endure the rigor of child bearing and rearing while living under circumstances that most of us would consider incredible. Rightly so, African history, social morality and ceremonial practice dictates that the role of mother be looked upon with honor, respect, great pride and endless admiration. In tribute, one of the most prevalent reoccurring themes found in African art is that of motherhood.
The Fanti are members of the famous Akan people who live in central and southern Ghana. Collectively they produce several categories of art from statues and textiles to jewelry and furniture. The Fanti are famed for their A’kua’ba dolls that are used to promote fertility. They bare a strong resemblance to the works of their neighbors the Ashanti. In fact the entire artistic output of the Ghanaian population has been heavily influenced by the Ashanti. Treasured objects such as statues and amulets are placed in shires by all Akan people. The figure on display is such a treasured object. Gracefully sculpted with traditional cultural characteristics in place this Fanti fertility piece has attained a proper blackened coating, a tribute to the deceased and from years of being swathed with libations. Despite the age and color this statue has a softened appearance. Perhaps its from the smoothness attained from years of handling or the rounded full features the artisan incorporated into the mother and child; symbolizing health and wellness. Please note that a section from the base of the stool is missing. This does not upset the balance of the statue nor does it detract from the over all beauty or value.
