When it comes to artistic beauty Africans are very sensitive, one reason being they associate it with prestige and honor. Grand embellishments, lavish ornamentations and highly detailed figurative carvings had to be as beautiful as possible. Important pieces that reflected and served to preserve Bamoun culture, tribal lore or history were especially cherished. The two bronze figures offered are exact well-detailed representations of the revered king and queen mother of Cameroon. They are both topped with unique buffalo horn drinking vessels. These cups were crafted solely for the use of the royal pair when in public. When used, the unusual conformity of the horn would hide the mouths of the royal couple; so a person couldn't see how they drink. Fashioned from genuine buffalo horn (buffalo being a symbol of force) the horns feature stylized etchings of the king and queen mother, the classic Bamoun spider motif, symbolic of divinatory knowledge and the tranquil prosperous lizard of Bamoun lore. These intricately detailed designs hold implicit significance to the Bamoun. The self supporting bronze figures are expressive, well cast and finely detailed. The horns have been tastefully and securely attached to form this unique configuration. The price is for the pair!
