In virtually every corner of the African continent elders are held in high esteem and usually hold a prestigious position in the village. Their experience and knowledge make village elders indispensable to the tribe and are heavily relied upon. They are the problem solvers, the advisors, the mediators, the teachers, story tellers and grandfathers. It is believed that they are guided by spirits and often have the rulers’ ear. A Bembe artisan chose to honor such a man by crafting this beautiful wooden sculpture.
Coming upon this statue my attention was drawn first to the pupil-less deep set eyes which are highlighted by white kaolin powder. Upon inspection I admired the total stature of the figure, his erect straight back posture and perfectly folded legs all served to intensify my gaze. His torso wasn’t muscular but rounded, smooth and well formed denoting age and an underlying strength. There was something so serene and calming yet powerful about this Bembe elder figure. I concluded that the skill of the craftsman captured the true essence of the important village elder. Nicely done! Please note that this Congo statue was carved from a light wood.
